From the Choirmaster: Many Thanks to Our Choir and Musicians

So many people have complimented or thanked me for our wonderful music from Passion Sunday through the glorious Easter Day Eucharist, and I would like to send those compliments and thanks to our faithful volunteer choir members and section leaders. Please join me in thanking them: Annette Bandy, Bob Barnhardt, Chris Crew, Cathy Elsea, Vivian Finkelstein, Phillip Hopkins, Sarah Ittoop, Patricia Michael and Angela Wainaina.

Our additional musicians create a beautiful setting for our congregational and choral singing. Our own Peter Bourey plays the trumpet whenever needed (thank you, Peter!), while most of the string and brass players have been playing with us for several years. At St. Timothy’s, we have a tradition of encouraging young musicians, and our special musicians include three young brass players from NC State, along with their teacher, tubist Jack Fuller, and violinist Shelby Austin who has played for us since she was a sophomore in high school. Our tenor and bass vocal soloists have been singing Jesus, the Evangelist, and solos in our orchestral masses for several years and are young singers from the college program of the NC School for the Arts.

Welcome to John and Farewell to Preston

Posted by Webwright September 6, 2010 under Choir News, Church News

What a pleasure it is to welcome John Herrmann to St. Timothy’s as out new organist! John has been filling the position as interim organist since Preston Smith left last June. John will now be permanently in the position of part-time organist and will work with Patricia Warren to accompany the choir and provide all of the service music. John comes to us with decades of experience as a pianist and organist. He has directed music programs in churches in California, Florida, New York and North Carolina. John also has many piano and organ students and teaches at both the keyboards and in the classroom. It is our privilege to have him on our organ bench, and we give him a hearty “Welcome”!

Our former organist, Preston Smith, played his last Sunday with us on June 11th. Preston will be at St. Timothy’s on Sunday, September 12th, so we will have the opportunity to say “Goodbye and God Speed”. Please make sure you are here for the service and for the Coffee Hour on that day and wish Preston well.

Hymn Sing and Ice Cream/Dessert Social

Posted by Webwright August 24, 2009 under Choir News, Church Events, Church News

NOTE: This event has been rescheduled and will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 7:30 PM.

Everyone is invited to a good old fashioned hymn sing followed by lots of ice cream and other desserts on Saturday evening, September 19th at 7:30 PM. We are looking for many to come and raise their voices with their favorite hymns. We also would like anyone who plays an instrument to bring it along and join in the festivities. After we sing all of our favorite hymns, we will enjoy some ice cream in the parlor and hear all about our choir and what the choir’s plans are for the fall. Come and invite everyone you know to join us on the 19th.

A Word From Our Choir Director

Posted by Webwright June 9, 2008 under Choir News, Church News

June 1st was the final Sunday of the Choir’s regular season. We would like to thank the members of the Choir for their faithful and exemplary service in providing beautiful and meaningful music for our liturgies. We would also like to thank our organ Scholar, Mari Pedroza, who is graduating from high school and leaving us for Appalachian State University. Having Mari as our Organ Scholar this year has been a delightful experience.

For our musical parishioners, there are two opportunities to offer your gifts during the summer months. The Summer Choir will begin rehearsals on Sunday, June 15th, at 10 AM in the loft. This is an ideal time to “try out” singing in the choir for anyone eleven and older. This is also the time when we encourage instrumentalists who would like to play in church (on the hymns only, or to also offer an accompanied solo piece) to arrange for a Sunday on which to do so. Please contact Dr. Warren if you would like to volunteer for the Summer Choir or to play your instrument during worship. We will be looking for a new organ Scholar and additional soloists for the choir to start in September, so if you happen to know any young organist (high school age or older) or trained singer (college age and older) who might be interested in serving at St. Timothy’s, please have them contact Dr. Warren at 919-528-8950 or give her his/her name and contact information.
