Our parish is one of the five founding parishes of North Raleigh Ministries. We have supported this good work through monthly monetary donations and volunteers, and we still are very involved in its mission. North Raleigh Ministries provides a food pantry and crisis center. With these services, families in north Raleigh can obtain needed food items and assistance with rent or mortgage payments, utility bills and prescription medications. The Food Pantry and the Crisis Center are supported by proceeds from the Thrift Shop. The new location of North Raleigh Ministries is 9650-161 Strickland Road in the Harvest Oaks Shopping Center.
Beginning Sunday, February 6th and for the following three Sundays, we will have a food drive for North Raleigh Ministries. The food pantry at North Raleigh Ministries could use tomato products, soups, canned meats and desserts. Please remember: no frozen foods or items that need refrigeration. You may also drop food off during the week at the parish office. If you have any questions, please call Keith Bandy at 782-0315.
Our Church School will be focusing on Stewardship from now through Sunday, October 31st (Touchdown Sunday). We will have pledge cards available for the children, and we will be participating in a Service Sunday on October 17th. We will be assembling backpacks for BackPack Buddies for North Raleigh Ministries. This program provides healthy foods to hungry children at time when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. We will be collecting food from now through October 17th. Our clients’ children need your help! We will be taking in-kind donations of new book bags, clothing and school supplies (notebooks, pencils, markers, etc.) or monetary donations towards the purchase of these items through August 2nd. This year’s goal is to assist 100 children ranging in age from 4 to 17. Currently we only have 10 book bags and minimal school supplies. By donating to this cause, you will help a child be better prepared to succeed during the school year. The giveaway will take place on Thursday, August 5th from 5 to 7:30 PM at North Raleigh Ministries.
According to research, there are many consequences, both mentally and physically, for food insecure children as this directly affects their development. Aside from the obvious physical effects of food insecurity, these children are more likely to miss school days and have behavioral problems. Food insecurity can also lead to depression, obesity, anxiety and memory problems later in life. North Raleigh Ministries Backpack Buddies program is dedicated to stopping food insecurity by providing food for 40 children each week. You can help by donating items such as individual snack items or cans of fruit. This program especially needs donations of 100% juice boxes and shelf stable milk. You can also help by making a monetary contribution. When the donations of these specific items fall short, we are forced to purchase them. Thank you to everyone who has helped with this program!
