The Baptism of Our Lord

January 11th, 2009 by Webwright

The First Sunday after Epiphany is also called “The Baptism of Our Lord”. The name “Epiphany” is derived from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “appearing”. Anglican Prayer Books interpret the word with an alternative title, “The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles”. The last phrase is a reference to the story of the Wise Men from the East. A Christian observance on January 6th is found as early as the end of the second century in Egypt. The feast combined commemorations of the Visit of the Magi who were led by the Star of Bethlehem, the Baptism of Jesus in the waters of the River Jordan, and Jesus’ first recorded miracle, the changing of water into wine at the marriage of Cana in Galille – all thought of as manifestations of the Incarnate Lord (Lesser Feasts and Fasts, p. 106).

Church School Meeting

January 4th, 2009 by Webwright

There will be a meeting of all the Church School Teachers next Saturday, January 10th at 10 AM in the Parish Hall. We need to review what things have gone well and not so well from September through December and what things we need to be doing from January through May.

Vacation Bible School planning meetings will begin in January. There will be a short organizational meeting on Sunday, January 18th at 10 AM in the Parish Hall. We will review and pick a theme for 2009. We are also looking for a volunteer to step forward and help organize this year’s program. Please consider taking on this important and fun ministry on behalf of the children at St. Timothy’s Church.
