Newcomers’ Committee Swinging Into Action on March 13th

Posted by Webwright under Church News, Newcomers' Committee

Our newly formed Newcomers’ Committee is planning a number of activities and events to help move persons from being a “visitor” to being an active, involved and faithful “communicant” of Saint Timothy’s. The first work of the committee will be evident on Sunday, March 13th in the form of “greeters” at both the 9 and 11 AM services. They will be there to welcome people who are visiting Saint Timothy’s for the first time, make sure they receive information about the parish and know how to get to the Coffee Hour after the 11 AM service. It is incumbent on the ushers and all the rest of use to welcome newcomers and direct or introduce them to the “greeter”. Please help the work of the Newcomers’ Committee and don’t “leave it to someone else” to welcome those visiting for the first time. If you are interested in being a member of the committee, please give your name to Father James, Ed Watson, Mary Watson or Doug Jurney.

Confirmation Classes Beginning February 20th

Posted by Webwright February 19, 2011 under Church News, Courses

Father James would like to meet with all adults and young people who want to attend the Confirmation Classes in the Parlor at 10 AM on Sunday, February 20th. The parents of young people wanting to be confirmed should attend this first class. At that time everyone will receive a syllabus, and we will begin the first class. The Confirmation will be during the Bishop’s Annual Visitation, Sunday, April 10th at 11 AM.

It is expected in The Episcopal Church that everyone who is baptized will be confirmed. Our Prayer Book rubrics say, In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop. Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of hands by a bishop, are also expected to make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism in the presence of a bishop and to receive the laying on of hands (BCP, p. 412). We also use the Confirmation Classes to prepare people converting to The Episcopal Church from other branches of the Faith, and people also use the classes to just review and gain more knowledge about The Episcopal Church.

The topics of the remaining classes are:

  • February 27: The Bible and Anglicans
  • March 6: The Book of Common Prayer
  • March 13: The Sacraments – Effectual Signs of Grace
  • March 20: The Eucharist, The Mass, The Holy Communion, The Lord’s Supper
  • March 27: Confession
  • April 3: The Episcopal Church in the U.S.A.
  • April 10: Bishop’s Visitation and Confirmation
  • April 17: The Anglican Communion
  • April 24: No Class (Easter Day)
  • May 1: Christian Stewardship: A Rule of Life

Newcomers’ Committee

Posted by Webwright February 6, 2011 under Church News, Newcomers' Committee

We need a number of volunteers to use their time and talents on our newly formed Newcomers’ Committee to plan events and to serve as “greeters”.  Training will be available for this important work, and the first meeting will be on Sunday, February 13th at 10 AM in the Parlor. The ultimate goal of the committee is to incorporate any visitors or newcomers into the life of Saint Timothy’s so they have an easy time moving from “visitor” to “active, involved, devoted, pledging and faithful” members. If you are interested in being a member of the committee, please give your name to Father James, Ed Watson, Mary Watson or Doug Jurney and attend the meeting on February 13th.
